Advanced technical information

Setting up this website was easy.
I started by registering with Blogger and choosing a template for the weblog. Blogger offers a variety of templates, and many more can be found by googling 'blogger templates'.

The template takes care of the general layout of the page. I had to tweak it in order to remove my personal profile, and add the list of categorized links (currently showing on the left). There is plenty of information available on the web relating to how to modify, or 'hack', blogger templates. I believe that O'Reilly even publishes a book on 'Blogger Hacks'.

Setting up the website took around three days, and the administration of the site requires almost no effort. Blogger takes care of managing archives and links to permanent pages. Links can be updated and managed by the administrator using a bookmarklet from blogrolling (this required purchasing a subscription costing USD19.99 per year), which I believe at present is best left to the administrator.

Duties of the website administrator:

Admitting new members

Any potential new member must contact the administrator, as members need to receive an invitation through Blogger. The administrator can also withdraw member rights to any of the existing members.

Manage hyperlinks
Thanks to blogrolling (subscription service), the administrator can manage the links posted on the site without need to update the HTML code each and every time. The HTML code in the site template contains a javascript instruction that retrieves the relevant lists of links from blogrolling.
Managing the list of links could not be any easier: the administrator has saved in the list of browser bookmarks a bookmarklet (another javascript instruction). To update the list of links, one needs to visit the new website, then launch the bookmarklet. A pop-up from blogrolling asks the user all relevant details, then it updates the remote list in real time.
In other words, updating the links is as simple as pressing three buttons. It takes ten seconds - the time needed to load the webpages.

Optional - Edit posts
Occasionally, posts may require editorial attention. The administrator can either intervene directly, or ask the author of the post to rectify any issues by himself .

That's it. If anything else strikes my mind, I'll update the post.
